Oatmeal

I think we can all agree oatmeal is good for us. And who doesn't love a nice bowl of hot oatmeal on a cold morning?

My kids love those little instant packs of oatmeal. You know, the ones that are way over sweetened with who knows what and a lot of it? Yeah, again, I thought I was doing good. I figure they're better than Coco Puffs. But I could be wrong.

I recently tossed those instant packs (ok, so actually we finished eating them) and I've started making the real deal. Better oatmeal - steel-cut or old fashioned rolled oats. Add some fruit and/or nuts and yum! A favorite around here is to add dehydrated apples from the food storage supply. They soften in the hot water or milk and sweeten the oatmeal. We add a little cinnamon and breakfast disappears. Almost as fast as it does on Sugar Cereal Saturday. :)

And oatmeal is not just for breakfast. It's in granola, muffins, even cookies.

  1. We eat Scottish oatmeal from Bob's Red Mill just about every morning around here. We add anything from blueberries, blackberries, apples, walnuts, honey, currants, raisins, bananas, yogurt (not homemade yet, but this week we'll try) cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, and strawberries, not all at once of course, but different days, different things. I add it to my breads too. It's our favorite.

  2. I just eat the old fashioned oats with a few nuts, a banana, and milk--not cooked, just like cereal--every morning for breakfast. Keeps me full till lunchtime and no added sugar, yay!
