Check Your Pantry

I took a survey of my pantry, just checking out the standard items that I grew up eating and have kept on buying. I found a few that I honestly didn't know were "edible food like substances" to quote In Defense of Food. Syrup, for example. Oh, I had no idea. I thought we were eating maple syrup, the kind I saw as a kid seeping into buckets hanging from trees. Turns out Aunt Jemima is Corn Syrup, High Fructose Corn Syrup, water, cellulose, gum, caramel color, salt, sodium benzoate and sorbic acid, artificial and natural flavors, sodium hexametaphosphate. Ok, so now there's pure maple syrup in my fridge. :) I know, syrup isn't exactly a health food anyway you look at it, but with the cost of better maple syrup, I can guarantee we're eating pancakes more sparingly. :)

What are some "edible food like substances" YOU have discovered in your pantry?

  1. "Healthy" cereal and "healthy" granola bars. Too many ingredients to name, let alone pronunce, let alone eat.

  2. Pure maple syrup is so expensive! But I've learned to use it sparingly because I am addicted to whole wheat pancakes. I have a friend who puts some berries and a little bit of sugar in a blender and pours that on her pancakes. Sometimes we do that.

  3. pudding. my husband loves the stuff....

does it make you mad that they put sugar in sooo many canned foods? I am pretty sure ALL major brands of canned tomatoes have sugar in them. I usually have to buy store brand to get them without sugar.

  4. confession: I do not like the flavor of real maple syrup. I also don't like the sweet fake stuff, but I like it more than the real. I think i just don't care for the taste of maple. I prefer jam on my pancakes and waffles although I know that they can also have high sugar content. sigh............
