I read a great article in National Geographic a couple weeks ago. It's been on my mind daily and wanted to share. The article has me thinking about meat consumption, living sustainably, food storage etc. etc. etc.
From page 5 -
" . . . eating meat is an incredibly inefficient way to feed oneself. It takes up to five times more grain to get the equivalent amount of calories from eating pork as from simply eating grain itself—ten times if we're talking about grain-fattened U.S. beef."
I have never thought of it that way. We are feeding animals grain to make them fat so we can eat them, when we could just eat the grain in the first place. Instead. And feed a lot more people with that grain. Even if we just ate the grain instead of the meat more often, imagine the difference.
There's a lot more to think about.
I'm starting to think God wasn't just trying to keep us healthy when he gave us the Word of Wisdom. He was trying to help us save His Earth.
I LOVED that article when I read it a month or so ago. It touches on so many good points and really strengthens my resolve to eat better and be more earth aware. I'm the food storage specialist in my ward and I have been so tempted to reference it.
